The image of a hill crowned by one or more windmills is a picture inextricably associated with our lands. La Mancha. As is the silhouette of a castle sketched out on a headland. Castile. We travel to some places that define our region’s image.
Just before leaving Toledo, from dozens of kilometres away, we see the Almonacid castle perched on a mount and watching over the old road to La Mancha. It’s worth a short stop to admire the views.
From there, we continue to Tembleque: this visit is a must, as the town has one of the most beautiful main squares in Spain, a perfect example of 17th century popular Baroque.
The perfect place for lunch is Madridejos where, among other things, the "Tío Genaro", windmill - one of the oldest in La Mancha - is still standing.
Consuegra deserves at least the rest of the day. The Consuegra windmills are a landmark and great tourist draw in Spain On the Calderico hill, 12 windmills and the Muela castle –among the best preserved in the region– dominate the rolling countryside. A sunset with these stunning views is a great climax to the day, before beginning the return journey.
